It's funny you should bring that up about SEOMoz... I emailed Rand about that months ago and he said it was something they should do. (I think that was even before your January posting of this). lol.
Thanks for pointing to the plugins and offering your own code. I'll have to try these out!

[...] Of course, the important question to ask here is: What can I do to increase the likelihood that a searcher will click on my link when it appears on a page of Google search results? The answer has been well covered, and has to do with search engine optimization (SEO) techniques related to your blog post’s title and the snippet Google displays under the title of your listing in the search results.
[...] This gets a little tougher because we can’t control it directly like PPC. You can optimize your site’s search engine snippets and create elusivity in there, if it applies. You can also do it all on one page, starting the page with grabbing their interest, creating a question that they can expect to get answered. They keep reading and hopefully go on to a sales or lead conversion. [...]

Very good, but it does not explain the thing that is puzzling me at the mo.
One one site, depending on the search phase, I can get 3 descriptions:
1 the meta description
2 the opd description
3 a snippet.

I have a meta desc, so why do I sometimes get a snippet, and sometimes not. Can you dig deeper? :)

[...] Your blog is an important part of your business, so why not optimize it with the rest of your site? You’d be surprised by how many people, even big names in SEO, don’t fully optimize their blogs. I’m obviously not the first to write on this topic, but I have some of my own ideas for quickly optimizing your blog, in 5 minutes or less. These are all WordPress Plugins, but certainly applying this to your own blog type would be great for your SEO. [...]
