The Ambiguity... I like that. When someone asked me what I do and I say "Freelance Programming", I'm sure I've thrown a piece of puzzle. They think I'm another encoder.

Aaron. You described the traditional business start up scenario, extremely well. I really feel for you. Unfortunately, it appears you have fallen into the myth of entrepreneurship that you have to do everything. Your negatives appear to outweigh your positives, because it appears you felt a need and then tried to do everything in your business. Not taking vacations is a real clue.

We have found that the really successful entrepreneurs and business owners design their business around them, to really shine at what they love and excel at doing, and to bring in others to complete the other business duties for them they want to avoid. This way, business owners can create the business conditions around them to enjoy working on the business and also take the time to enjoy their personal and family lives away from business.

It is all too easy to get caught up in the do everything mindset, because we business owners are totally responsible for the success of our business. But that does not mean we have to do everything. I too have caught myself in this mindset and had to take myself out several times. But doing so was worth it.

Aaron - you hit it on the head exactly! Great post. It was almost as if I was reading my own words. I think anyone considering working for themselves should read this.
