I can understand why some SEOs, especially ones who are looking for new techniques, don't rat on fellow SEOs, SEOs motivations are different. But as business people it is all about competition, which is great, as long as it is fair. So our motivations for ratting spammers out is different.

To Keri, I am sorry to hear about your mom's troubles when searching for geneology information, that is horrible, and we do need to get those creeps to stay in their dark corner of the web.

I've made a couple of spam reports to Google. One was when my mother was searching for genealogy information and half of her results were porn sites.

Lately, I've sent some notes to webmasters at .edu sites letting them know that they've got spam on their sites, generally from blog or forum comments. I don't bother to report them to Google, as I figure it's a case of they didn't know they had holes in their site, rather than a rouge SEO firm.

>Unfair competition is never allowable

I gotta say, I'm in the same "never done a spam report" camp. To me, it is among the more unethical things to do, and not an honorable way to be the competition.

I won't get into the entire philosophy of the why's, but a big part of it is having a bit of respect for those that are willing to push the envelope, and learn from them rather than snitch on them. Even if you don't use the more high risk techniques (I don't generally personally), you have to question subservience to a ruleset created by people with entirely different goals than you.
