This is just one of the reasons why I hardly do any SEO for other people anymore, some people just don't realise that time is money.

5 or 6 half hour chats throught the week soon mounts up, can break your concentration if they ring at the wrong time and if like me you feel rude cutting them off the 5 or 6 times can soon move up to 7 or 8, then 9 or 10.

I could just imagine the response if you started clocking the time and then gave them an invoice for it at the end of the week.

They would probably start slagging you of on forums anout being money grabbing scammers.

I was hopeless at writing as a kid, (basically never did) and then spent 20 years in a manual job so didn't need to write much.

Then as I got more in to SEO and especially blogs, I started writing more and more.

My spelling and punctuation is still terible, but I really enjoy writing now, especially last thing at night when I just waffle about whatevers happened during the day or whatevers on my mind.

I like to just sit, write and post.
(with no editing or spellchecking)
sometimes it is just nonsence, but other times it can be good stuff.

I have at least 6 or 7 blogs now which I just waffle on, but also use for serious stuff too. It's a great way of dropping in links to sites you are working on too ;o)

Good tips, as someone just getting going in the freelance game I defenitely try to be aware of the "fatal attraction" clients. Yes we all need new business but not at the cost of headaches and lost time babysitting. I can also tell you that this can be a problem in the corporate world but under different names.

Interesting post and some good observations here. A lot of this comes from experience and you get a gut feel for new clients, although sometimes it can be too tempting to turn away. If you're a new business then you have to balance the experience and client list with the potential problems!

Yes, it is quite frustrating to see your brand and the 'Did you mean..'. When you have a name that looks like a misspelling of another bigger brand..then you have to struggle to make yours 'better' from an seo point of view at least.

The power of anchor text is not generally rated as high as you and SEOMOZ put it (I agree with you!). Linking -- especially quality linking -- has been the second most verifiable traffic-builder we can document (after content renewal). Both need to be fussed over like a garden in spring: no shortcuts, just time, time, time!
